EMAS: Environmental Protection in the Company

Many people get involved in environmental protection in small ways. They may drive their cars less often and save energy. Environmental protection works similarly in companies – but in big ways.

You know the story in your own home. When family members do not all pull together, energy saving simply does not work. Environmental protection in a company suffers the same fate when everyone does not join in. Therefore, according to EMAS, the management system for environmental protection in a company, all levels of the company should be involved in the planning and carrying out of environmental protection measures. That means, of course, employees too. They are especially important.

Sustainability begins within "your own four walls".

What does EMAS stand for?

What does EMAS stand for?

EMAS – European Management and Audit Scheme – stands for environmental management integrated at every level of a company. Most of all for transparency and a means of checking. The credibility of the environmental reporting also is involved. Internally and externally.

The company's own environmental protection should be assessed regularly and improved continuously. All employees have a major influence. Of course the general public too should be able to become involved. The demanding EMAS validation is a quality seal for candor and openness for talks.

Validated Environmental Protection

With the EMAS validation, Werner & Mertz committed itself to openness and transparency. Our production sites in Mainz (since 2003) and in Hallein (Austria, since 2005), are examined for compliance with EMAS criteria every year. For the subsidiary Werner & Mertz Service & Logistik the facilities, production, and logistics also are examined by independent experts, optimized and re-examined. The results are published in the annual Sustainabiliity Report, to which the general public has access at any time.

Unfortunately, the European Parliament has not allowed use of the EMAS logo on products or their packaging. We believe that transparency for consumers is vital. For this reason we have become a member of the "Wir für EMAS“ campaign and the EMAS Club Europe, both of which work to make EMAS better known as the seal for environmentally aware production and to gain permission to put the seal directly on the products.
